Stonechat

Appearance

StonechatThe male has a black head, an orange or red underside and a dark brown back and wings. It has obvious white patches on each side of its neck, rump and wings.

The female and young birds look like a more faded version of the male.

Habitat

Stonechats are found within the heathland habitats of the National Park.

Adaptations

Stonechats sit on the top of gorse bushes and have a call that sounds like a couple of pebbles being knocked together. This is how they get their names!

Food Source

Omnivore: They usually feed on caterpillars, moths, spiders, flies and sometimes worms. In the autumn and winter they also eat seeds and berries.

Conservation

The traditional management systems that created the forest heathland are in decline. This impacts on the plants and animals that rely on this artificially managed landscape.

Help to look after the heathland habitat by taking your litter home and prevent heathland fires by only using designated barbecue areas in the Forest.
